Saints women's hoops fall to Skidmore on Senior Day; set to host Vassar in first round playoff game

Kelly Donnelly, the Liberty League's leading scorer, led Skidmore with 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Thoroughbreds went on to defeat the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team 42-31 to close out the regular season in Burkman Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Annabella Pugliese led the Saints with nine points and nine rebounds, while first-year Katie Frederick added six points and eight rebounds. Katie Gallagher grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and two steal for the Saints.

After nearly three minutes of scoreless play to open the game, Frederick hit a layup to put the Saints on the board 2-0. Veronica Moceri quickly countered with a shot from the arc for the Thoroughbreds. Pugliese and Marlee Gunn posted a 3-pointer and a buzzer-beating shot to take a 13-12 lead after the first frame.

The Scarlet and Brown outshot the Saints only a mere 8-3 in the second quarter to take a 21-15 halftime lead. A layup from Donnelly and free throw from Haley English were Skidmore's only baskets in the second.

The Thoroughbreds rebounded after the break out scoring St. Lawrence 27-10 to secure the win and a home championship weekend. It took the Saints over six minutes in the third quarter to get back on the board, but with the bucket Frederick gave the Saints a one-point advantage, but a 9-2 run put the Thoroughbreds back on top for the remainder of the game.

"Skidmore was the better team today and deserved to win," said head coach Dan Roiger. "They were fighting for a playoff championship with four seniors and a junior who have 16 seasons of starting under their belt. Their defense caused us to rush shots and we didn't capitalize on the opportunities we had and then when we did get open shot, we couldn't make those either. But it's been exciting year and we'll shake this one off and get ready for the playoffs on Tuesday."

Second to Donnelly, Moceri added 13 points and four rebounds, while Ari Fustini tallied six points and five rebounds.

The Saints wrapped up the regular season 17-8 overall and 12-6 in conference play, while Skidmore finished 16-9 and 14-4.

Before today's contest the Saints honored the three members of the Class of 2018: Kaelyn Kohlasch, Jenny Scudder and Cara Waterson.

St. Lawrence will host Vassar in a Liberty League first round game on Tuesday, February 20th at 6 p.m.
