Alfred, NY – Brianna Sayer (Hermon, NY) and Caselynn Fulton (Saint Cloud, MN) both recorded double-doubles but host Alfred State broke a 63-63 tie in the final minute to earn a 67-63 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Fulton drained a jumper with 49 seconds remaining after a Kim McCarthy (Ludlow, MA) steal to tie the game at 63. On the ensuing possession the Pioneers (6-14) grabbed an offensive rebound and Breana Gleaton finished a bucket inside.
The Roos (6-13) turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions and Catherine Bialecki sealed the win for Alfred State with a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining.
Sayer led all players with 23 points to go with 10 rebounds, while Fulton added 13 points and tied a game-high with 11 rebounds. Tatiana Laroche (Elmont, NY) also scored in double figures for SUNY Canton finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds, but fouled out in just 17 minutes of action.
Alfred State jumped out to an early 20-13 lead after the opening quarter but the Roos put together a dominating second 10 minutes, outscoring the Pioneers 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 36-31 lead into intermission.
The Pioneers took a one point advantage, at 52-51, into the final quarter. Neither team led by more than five points the remainder of the way as Alfred State pulled out the victory.
