The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team skated to a 0-0 tie for the second time this season, as neither the Saints nor Dartmouth were able to solve the opposing goaltender in an ECAC Hockey contest at Thompson Arena in Hanover, New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.

Dartmouth goaltenders combined for 46 saves, while Sonjia Shelly stopped 16 shots to earn her fourth shutout of the season for the Saints. Big Green senior Shannon Roop earned the tie on Dartmouth's senior day, stopping three shots in her second career start in the first 2:37 before giving way to classmate Christine Honor, who made 43 saves.

The Saints remain in fifth place in the ECAC Hockey standings at 13-13-6, 8-7-5 in ECAC Hockey play. Dartmouth moved to 5-20-2, 4-15-1. Rensselaer, which defeated fourth-ranked Princeton 2-1, moved up into a tie with the Saints with 21 points, while Harvard and Quinnipiac are just one point behind in a tie for seventh.

The game extended the team's program record for overtime games in a season to 13, two shy of the NCAA record of 15, set by Boston University in the 2009-10 season and matched by Penn State last year.

"The team battled hard again," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells '92. "We took 93 shots on net on the weekend, and we're continuing to generate plenty of opportunities. Eventually we'll start to cash in. We did a good job staying with the game as it didn't have as much flow as we normally like to see. We had some huge blocked shots at the end of the overtime period on the penalty kill as well.

"We're getting close to playoff hockey time and we've been in a lot of playoff type games," Wells continued. "We're playing at the intensity level that you need to succeed in the playoffs."

The Saints peppered the Dartmouth net with 33 shots over the first two periods, thanks in part to six power play opportunities. St. Lawrence's best scoring chance of the first period came halfway through the frame on the power play, but Honor stopped three straight shots, including one from point black by Rachael Smith.

Five minutes into the second period, Nadine Edney had another great scoring chance, gathering her own rebound and sweeping a shot toward net, but Honor made a left-pad save.

Dartmouth's best scoring chance came halfway through the third period, as Tess Bracken made a drop pass to Gabby Billing, and Billing fired a shot from the slot, but Shelly snagged the puck with her glove to preserve the scoreless tie.

Justine Reyes nearly gave the Saints their third overtime win of the season, beating two defenders with a toe drag before sending a shot through Honor that hit the right post.

The Saints will host Quinnipiac and Princeton to close out the regular season next weekend, with the team honoring the senior class after Saturday's game.
