St. Lawrence University goaltender Carmen MacDonald made a season-high 46 saves on Friday afternoon, backstopping the women's hockey team to a 1-1 tie with nationally-ranked No. 5 Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. Senior Rylee Smith scored the lone goal for the Saints, who move to 5-7-1 (4-2-1) on the season.

St. Lawrence was outshot 47-25, including a 16-4 deficit in the first period as Quinnipiac (10-1-4, 3-1-3) came out firing. It is the 12th consecutive game between the Saints and Bobcats that was determined by two or fewer goals, and the third overtime game in the last four meetings.

"It's the understatement of the year to stay we were fortunate to get a tie," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "We had our moments, but for the most part, Quinnipiac really kept us off our game.

Despite the heavy advantage in shots, Quinnipiac was unable to solve MacDonald in the opening period. Her play allowed St. Lawrence to steal a 1-0 lead early in the second stanza, as Smith put the visitors ahead 1-0 at 6:43. Just after a Bobcat penalty expired, Smith beat Quinnipiac goalie Chelsea Laden for her sixth of the season, with fellow senior captain Mel Desrochers earning the lone assist.

The Bobcats would respond minutes later at 9:24, converting on their first power play try of the game to level the scoring at 1-1. A beautiful cross-ice pass by Cydney Roesler set up Kelly Babstock perfectly, as she one-timed a slap shot past MacDonald for the tying tally and to cap the second period scoring.

The third period proved to be a goaltending dual, as Laden and MacDonald exchanged key saves throughout. MacDonald robbed Shiann Darkangelo on a rebound try in the slot, snaring the puck right off Darkangelo's stick while diving to her left. She would then later stop Babstock in the final minute of the period on a short-handed breakaway try and clear the rebound to send the game to overtime.

St. Lawrence's best chances to earn the victory came in the extra period, as they outshot Quinnipiac 5-3 and had several quality bids. The Saints had a 3-on-1, but a centering pass from rookie Brooke Webster failed to connect at the far post. Kayla Raniwsky also had a chance at the top of the crease, but Laden foiled it to keep it a 1-1 draw.

"(Kelly) Babstock is as much fun to watch as anyone we have seen this year," added Coach Wells, whose team is currently tied for third in the ECAC Hockey standings. "I was very impressed with our resilience, especially in overtime where we had our best chances to win."

Laden finished with 24 saves for Quinnipiac, which was 1-for-2 on the power play. St. Lawrence was 0-for-4.

The Saints will play their final conference game of the calendar year tomorrow at Princeton at 3:00pm, while the Bobcats will square off with fellow nationally-ranked foe Clarkson.
