Saints women's hockey team storm past Purple Eagles, 6-3

The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team erased a 3-0 deficit behind six unanswered goals, skating past Niagara University on Tuesday night by the score of 6-3 at Dwyer Arena.

The Saints remain unbeaten through four games this season at 3-0-1, while the Purple Eagles fall to 2-5-0 after giving up goals to six different players.

"I think this was a great character effort for us to come back from three goals down," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "We were on our heels early as (Niagara) used to great transition game to get the first three."

Niagara grabbed the momentum only 3:01 into the game, taking a 1-0 lead when Kaleigh Chippy scored her second goal of the season on St. Lawrence rookie goaltender Carmen MacDonald. Jenna Hendrikx would give the home team a 2-0 cushion at 9:49, capping the first period scoring.

The Purple Eagles appeared to take control of the contest early in the second period, as they opened up a 3-0 lead at the 5:25 mark. Chippy set up her team's third goal, finding Erica Owczarczak for her first tally of the year.

However, the Saints would show their resiliency, tying the score at 3-3 thanks to three goals in a span of 6:04 to set up a dramatic third period. Sophomore Mel Desrochers got the visitors on the scoreboard trailing 3-1 at 8:02 of the second, with assists going to first-year student Jessica Hon and junior Kelly Sabatine. Rookie Margo Lunn's first collegiate goal at 12:10 from senior Alley Bero pulled the Saints within one before captain Karell Emard capped the period's scoring with her third goal of the year at 14:06. Sophomore Rylee Smith and junior Brooke Fernandez assisted on the game-tying tally.

With the momentum on its side, St. Lawrence would continue to attack Niagara goaltender Sarah Moses from the opening faceoff in the third period. Bero would need only 57 seconds to score her first goal of the year while her team skated short-handed to put the Scarlet and Brown on top, 4-3.

Hon would add an insurance goal assisted by sophomore Bailey Habscheid midway through the stanza at 10:07 to seize control for the visitors. Senior Vanessa Emond would cap the game's scoring at 6-3 with an empty net tally in the final minute.

The Saints closed with a 30-22 advantage in shots, as MacDonald earned the win with a 19-save performance. Moses closed with 24 stops in the loss for the Purple Eagles.

St. Lawrence will look to continue its impressive start to the 2011-12 season when the Saints welcome the University of New Hampshire to Appleton Arena on Friday, October 21 at 4:00pm.
