Senior defenseman Brooke Fernandez has been named St. Lawrence University's finalist for ECAC Hockey's 2013 Student-Athlete of the Year Award.

The award recognizes a player who has matched their on-ice contributions with those in the classroom. Each of the conference's 12 institutions has one player nominated for the honor, which will be handed at the ECAC Hockey Championship Banquet on March 7.

"Brooke is very deserving of this recognition," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "She's both a dynamic defenseman and a stand-out student, and she will be in exceptional company amongst the other schools' nominees."

Fernandez boasts an overall GPA of 3.4 while double-majoring in history and anthropology. The Bloomfield, CT native currently ranks second in career points (84) and career goals (24) by a defenseman in St. Lawrence history. She is also currently second in defenseman scoring in ECAC Hockey with 19 points on five goals and 14 assists.

Brooke has also dedicated her time to the local community, as she has served as a mentor for the Canton Blades Girls Team for the 2012-13 season.

Fernandez and the Saints will open their ECAC Hockey title defense this weekend, again as the No. 5 seed, when they head to Hamden, CT for a best-of-three series with Quinnipiac University. The puck will drop on game one of the Saints and Bobcats on Friday, March 1 at 7:00pm at High Point Solutions Arena.
