Saints women's hockey MacDonald sets record; Tigers spoil Senior Day

The Princeton women's hockey team scored three goals in the third period en route to a 4-2 come-from-behind win at Appleton Arena on Saturday afternoon, spoiling the final regular season home contest for a group of seven seniors.

Netminder Carmen MacDonald became the program's all-time saves leader with her final save of the game giving her 3,067 so far throughout her career. She, as well as classmates Amanda Boulier, Jessica Hon, Giulia Mazzocchi, Kayla Raniwsky, Jacqueline Wand and Ellie Williams, were honored for their contributions to the St. Lawrence program in a postgame ceremony.

The Saints are now 18-10-4 and 12-5-3 on the season, while Princeton improves to 14-11-2 and 12-7-1 with the victory. The Tigers three third-period goals came in a span of less than three minutes down the stretch.

"It always seems like a crazy exciting finish at Appleton vs. Princeton," Head Coach Chris Wells said. "I think this is the 4th time in 7 years that the winning goal has been scored in the last minute here."

After entering the third period tied a 1-1, the teams traded goals to pull even at 2-2. First-year Kennedy Marchment scored at the 9:40 mark to give the Saints the lead before Hilary Lloyd pulled the Tigers even with just over three minutes to play. Then, at the 19:06 mark of the final frame, Cristin Shanahan buried a rebound to put Princeton in front for good. Kelsey Koelzer added an empty-net insurance tally with 20 seconds remaining to seal the win.

The Saints jumped out in front early with senior Kayla Raniwsky putting home the rebound from a Jenna Marks shot just under five minutes into the game. Princeton goaltender Kimberly Newell made the initial stop on a slapshot from Marks, but Raniwsky was waiting on the doorstep to give St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead.

Princeton also got their first goal on a rebound in front, as Briana Leahy picked up the puck in the crease and tucked it behind MacDonald at the 15:07 mark of the first period.

St. Lawrence challenged the call on the ice, saying a Princeton player had hit MacDonald's glove causing the rebound but after a lengthy review, the call stood and the game was tied 1-1 heading into the second.

The Saints limited the Tigers to less than less than 10 shots in each of the three period on Saturday afternoon, allowing just 20 to get through to MacDonald while putting 40 on net themselves.

"We had plenty of chances to pull away today," Wells added. "Princeton did an excellent job on the PK blocking shots and, most importantly, getting to loose pucks to clear down the ice and Newell made some monster saves to keep the game where it was."

Newell stonewalled Brooke Webster on a breakaway near the midway point of the third period, but Webster was able to maintain control of the puck and keep possession in the offensive zone, setting up Marchment's goal with 10:20 remaining.

Later in the period it was Webster who nearly gave the Saints a two-goal lead, but the puck sat in the crease before being cleared by the Tigers defense.

"We had a great chance to make it 3-1 and the puck was on the goal line, Princeton transitioned the puck and scored on the rush," Wells said. "Fun college hockey game to be in and certainly gives everyone a feel for what the next month has in store."

The Saints will finish out the regular season at Harvard and Dartmouth next weekend and will have to win out to secure home ice in the first round of the ECAC playoffs.
