The eighth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team outshot Harvard 41-16 on Friday night, but Beth Larcom made 40 saves and Becca Gilmore scored two goals to lead Harvard to a 2-1 win over the Saints in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena.
Gilmore got the Crimson on the board halfway through the second period, stopping a shot from the point by Emma Buckles right in front of the crease, then lifting a backhand over St. Lawrence goaltender Grace Harrison's shoulder.
St. Lawrence had numerous chances to tie the score with a 13-6 shot advantage in the second period and an 18-5 edge in the third, but Gilmore gave the Crimson a 2-0 lead with an empty-net goal with just 1:13 to play.
The Saints finally got one past Larcom with 46.6 second to play, with Hannah Miller setting up Justine Reyes (pictured above) with a pass through the crease, which Reyes one-timed into the back of the net, but the Saints were unable to get the equalizer.
"We played a very good game tonight, but couldn't get enough past Larcom," said Saints' head coach Chris Wells '92. "She was excellent tonight. Harvard played hard, blocked shots and did what was needed to win the game. We had very good chances all night and worked hard for them. It was an entertaining hockey game by both teams."
Harrison finished with 14 saves for the Saints.
St. Lawrence fell to 17-10-4 overall, 13-6-2 in ECAC Hockey, while Harvard improved to 13-13-2, 10-9-2. With the loss, the Saints are guaranteed to be the No. 4 seed in the ECAC Hockey playoffs and will host No. 5 Quinnipiac in a quarterfinal series next weekend. Harvard sits in sixth place in the conference standings, one point ahead of Princeton, and will be either the No. 6 or No. 7 seed, depending on the results of tomorrow's games.
St. Lawrence will host Dartmouth — with former St. Lawrence men's hockey coach and current interim Dartmouth women's hockey coach Joe Marsh making his return to Appleton Arena — in the regular season finale on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Saints will honor seniors Michelle Alonardo, Kennedy Marchment, Amanda McClure and Hannah Miller at the conclusion of the game.
