Seniors Kaelyn Kohlasch and Jenny Scudder each recorded 13 points as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season, topping Husson 62-42 in non-league play on Saturday afternoon in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Marlee Gunn was the third member of the Saints' squad to record double-digit scoring with 12 points. Katie Frederick led the Scarlet and Brown with a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Saints got off to a slow start after only recording six points during the first quarter and trailed by two points heading into the second.
"We struggled to score in the first quarter, but it was self-imposed with bad passes and missed layups," said head coach Dan Roiger.
Picking up the pace in the second, St. Lawrence grabbed its first lead of the game and extended that lead to as many as 13 points, heading to the locker with with a nine-point halftime lead.
The Saints would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the contest, despite the Eagles drawing the game within one point three times in the third quarter.
St. Lawrence held Husson to just 30 percent shooting from the floor and the Eagles were only able to capitalize on 15 percent of their attempted three pointers.
"We settled in nicely and executed well, especially in the fourth quarter," Roiger continued. "We played really solid defense today against Husson. They run a pure motion and other than a brief stretch of the third quarter we defended really well and controlled the boards. They have an excellent guard and our seniors and whole team did great work in keeping her under control. Overall, it was a nice improvement defensively today."
The Eagles were led by Megan Peach with 10 points, while Sarah Bragg contributed eight. Bragg and Emma Alley each grabbed six rebounds for Husson.
"Our players have worked hard this fall and it was nice to see their efforts pay off today with a win over a well-coached team with some great players," said Roiger.
St. Lawrence wraps up its first weekend of non-conference play 1-1, while Husson fell to 0-1 overall.
The Saints return to action after Thanksgiving break when they travel to SUNY Plattsburgh on Tuesday, Nov. 28th. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
