Cara Waterson scored a team-high 13 points but it wasn't enough as the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fell to William Smith 59-43, ending the teams' seven-game winning streak, in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gymnasium.

Second to Waterson, first-year Katie Frederick added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. Junior Meghan O'Connor recorded four points and four rebounds, while Meghan Hynes and Marlee Gunn each grabbed two steals for the Saints.

William Smith quickly tallied an 11-2 lead over the Saints on a layup from Mia Morrison early in the first quarter. The Herons managed to hold their lead and carried an eight-point advantage into the second frame.

Hynes kicked of the second quarter with a deep 3-pointer, cutting the Herons lead to just five points. Kendra Quinn-Moultrie responded with one for the Herons with just over eight minutes to play. William Smith outshot the Saints 15-5 in the second quarter and built a 32-14 lead by halftime.

Angela Bussone capped an 11-point run and gave the Herons a 25-point lead on a layup with 3:46 to play in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Saints worked to cut the Heron's lead but never made it closer than 14 points as the clock dwindled down.

"William Smith is a good team that beat us every which way today," said head coach Dan Roiger. "They were tougher than us, more aggressive, and more disciplined. They deserved to win and we did not. Overall, it was a good growth opportunity for us. This group has worked very hard to get better this year and today they learned about our weaknesses. Knowing my team, I expect on Monday they will get right back to work."

Mia Morrison led William Smith with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Quinn-Moultrie and Juliana Gamboa rounded out the top-three scorers with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Quinn-Moultrie went 3-for-4 from the arc, while Morrison posted a team-high two blocks, and Bussone grabbed two steals for the Herons.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while William Smith improved to 10-6 and 4-5.

St. Lawrence will return to Burkman Gymnasium for its third-consecutive weekend, facing off against Vassar and Bard on January 26-27.
