The Eastern College Athletic Conference has announced that St. Lawrence University first-year forward Caroline Dalton has been named the 2014 ECAC Division III Upstate Rookie of the Year. Meanwhile, junior Kara McDuffee earned Second Team All-Star honors after leading the Saints to the 2014 Liberty League regular season title and a 14-2 record.
Dalton made a significant impact on the Liberty League this season, as she led all conference rookies in scoring average (8.5 ppg) and rebounds per game (5.5), while also finishing second in the entire conference in blocks per game (1.7). The Fairport, NY native helped anchor the Saints' defense from her post position, helping St. Lawrence allow the fewest points per game in the league. Caroline was also named the Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the league's All-Rookie team.
"Caroline was an outstanding player for us this year and brought a presence on the floor that other teams had to plan for. She is an excellent shooter from all over the floor and has a high basketball IQ combined with intensity that makes her a great teammate," said Saints' head coach Dan Roiger. "I'm really looking forward to watching her grow as a player over the next three years and seeing her contribute more and more each season to our program."
McDuffee adds the ECAC honors to her list of accolades from a stellar junior season. She was a unanimous first team all-conference selection after averaging a double-double, averaging over 14 points and 11 rebounds per game. The Owego, NY native was also one of the Saints' clutch performers, as she scored a career-high 28 points in a win over eventual-playoff opponent RIT and scored 16 or more points in each of the final five games this season en route to the regular season conference title.
"Kara had another incredible year for us. She is all over the court and can shoot, dribble, pass, defend guards, defend the post, get rebounds, block shots, get steals, she is just everywhere," said Coach Roiger. "She has already had a major impact on our program but I'm really excited to have her next year as a senior."
The Liberty League was well-represented on the ECAC Upstate awards, as Vassar's Cydni Matsuoka was the 2014 Player of the Year and a First Team All-Star. RIT's Courtney Tennant and William Smith's Chloe Hayter joined McDuffee on the Second Team.
