Senior Kaelyn Kohlasch and first-year Katie Frederick recorded 17 and 12 points, respectively to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team to a 69-36 win over SUNY Canton on Saturday, December 16th at Burkman Gymnasium.

Frederick also added a team-high seven rebounds and three blocks for the Scarlet and Brown, while Cara Waterson posted a season-high five steals.

The Saints got an early jump on the Roos with back-to-back layups from Waterson and Meghan O'Connor and managed to hold a 12-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter. St. Lawrence extended their lead to 13 points midway through the second quarter and despite a couple turnovers, continued to hold a 31-19 lead at halftime.

After the break, the Saints accumulated one of their largest leads of the season, spanning the Roos by 24 poinys with just over four and a half minutes to play in the third.

Holding the Roos at bay, the St. Lawrence defense shut down most scoring opportunities for SUNY Canton in the final frame.

The Scarlet and Brown shot 50 percent from the floor and almost 69 percent from the free-throw line, and held SUNY Canton to just 22 percent from the floor and 16 from the arc. Kohlasch went 3-for-4 from the arc, while Jenny Scudder picked up the other 3-pointer for the Saints.

"I was really pleased with the effort we had on defense today," said head coach Dan Roiger. "I thought it was a consistent effort during the whole game. This was one of our better games for getting the ball quickly up the floor. In the first half we didn't shoot the ball well, but we capitalized on our chances in the second half."

SUNY Canton was led by Taylor Saltus with nine points and six rebounds, while Antanasia Chambers and Tatiana Laroche added six points and four rebounds each. Jasmine Dixon grabbed a team-high two steals for the Roos.

"It was a good first semester for us," Roiger concluded. "We're above .500 and two of our losses were by only a few points. I'm really excited to see what we can do during the second half of the season."

St. Lawrence will travel to Huntingdon, Pennsylvania for the Juniata Holiday Classic on December 29-30.
