Saints women skate to scoreless tie with Merrimack

The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team dominated possession, shots and scoring chances on Saturday afternoon, but Merrimack goaltender Samantha Ridgewell turned aside 42 shots and the Saints had to settle for a 0-0 tie with the Warriors at J. Thom Lawler Rink on Saturday afternoon in North Andover, Massachusetts.

"We played our best game of the year so far today," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "We had some great chances and made some fantastic plays. Ridgewell was superb in net and Merrimack competed hard all day long.

"It was a great early-season game for both teams. (Merrimack coach Erin Hamlen) and her team have done so well improving each year and their early start has been great for the parity in college hockey. There are a lot of quality players and just as many places to play."

Grace Harrison stopped 22 shots for the fourth-ranked Saints, who outshot the Warriors 20-3 in the third period.

The scoreless tie was the first for the program since Feb. 6, 1999, when St. Lawrence and Niagara skated to a scoreless tie at Appleton Arena. St. Lawrence also went the entire weekend without being assessed a penalty and has played 153 minutes and 12 seconds since sending a player to the penalty box.

St. Lawrence moved to 2-0-2 on the season, while Merrimack is now 2-3-2. The Saints will face second-ranked Clarkson in their home opener on Friday, October 20th, at 3:30 p.m.
