Saints women best top runners, finish third in NYSCTC

St. Lawrence University's women's cross country team conceded a seven-year win streak at the 2015 New York State Collegiate Track Conference Cross Country Championships at Hamilton College Saturday as the Saints rested their top five runners and finished third in the meet.

"A number of teams are treating this meet differently than they used to," said Saint director of cross country and track and field Mike Howard. "Some aren't coming and others are resting their top athletes for championship meets to come and the NCAA Regional. We decided to rest our top runners for both the men's and women's teams and let some of our kids who don't get to run every meet a chance to show their stuff.

"We want to be competitive, but on the other hand we have some big meets looming over the final few weeks of the season."

Nazareth won the women's championship with 38 points with host Hamilton second with 46, the Saints third with 65 and Utica fourth with 77. Nine teams and 86 runners competed in the meet on Hamilton's 6000 meter course.

Caroline Driscoll was the top Saint finisher in 7th place in 23:21.9 and was the top first year athlete in the race. She was joined by classmates Sarah Moon, 10th in 23:41.8, Gaelyn Bronson, 15th in 23:50.3 and sophomores Lindsay Howe, 16th in 23:52.3 and Marla Davidson, 17th in 23:55.8 for the Saint scoring five. Sophomore Carrie Pomainville, 19th in 23:59.4 and rookie Emma Putre, 31st in 24:31.1, completed the Saint top seven.

Madeline Funk was 34th in 24:35.6, Courtney Mullen was 46th in 25:17.1, Alexis Bruno 47th in 25:21.1, Miabelle Salzano was 52nd in 25:46.7 and Rachel Waldrop was 69th in 27:31.1.

The Saints will return to action next weekend with a full squad on hand as they host the Liberty League Championship on the Ronald C. Hoffmann Cross Country Course.
