Saints volleyball wins twice; clinches Liberty League #3 seed

The St. Lawrence University Volleyball team swept a pair of matches on the final day of the regular season and in doing so clinched the third seed for the upcoming Liberty League Tournament. The Saints defeated Allegheny College (3-1) and St. John Fisher (3-0) Saturday at Buffalo State to complete the regular season.

St. Lawrence (17-17) rallied after dropping the first set to Allegheny (16-11) 25-22 and won the next three sets by scores of 25-22, 27-25 and 25-21 for the 3-1 win. Against St. John Fisher (14-18), the Saints won in straight sets 25-14, 25-19 and 25-21.

The victory over St. John Fisher forced a higher level tie-breaker with RIT for the #3 position in the Liberty League Tournament. The Saints earned the third seed with a better record during the regular season against teams with a .500 or better record.

In the Allegheny match, Cristina Deschaine had 13 kills, Grace Kelly had 11 and Masha Kolesnikova added 10 to lead the St. Lawrence attack. Kolesnikova added three aces and Deschaine led the way with four blocks while Katie Kull handed out 49 assists and Mariah Dignan had a career-high 36 digs.

Deschaine's kills move her to 996 for her career and just four kills away from becoming just the fifth player in St. Lawrence history to eclipse the 1,000-kill plateau. Dignan had a great weekend with 86 digs in three matches including 31 against Buffalo State and her career-high against Allegheny. Her season total of 581 digs for the season is the second most in school history as she passed Katherine Pierce who had 567 in 2009.

In the St. John Fisher match, Deschaine, Kolesnikova and Lexi Brown shared the team lead with eight kills each while Alexandra Good handed out 28 assists and Dignan chipped in 16 digs while Brown and Kolesnikova had 14 digs each.

"Today was a much better performance for our team," said Head Coach Shelly Roiger. "We had a lot of great contributions from several different players who took advantage of the opportunity to step in and contribute. Because of yesterday's loss (to Buffalo State) we put ourselves in a position where the St. John Fisher match was a must win match for us due to the conference tie-breaker guidelines. Not only did we step up and get the job done, but we did so in a fairly dominant fashion. Our team played with a lot of heart today and I'm very excited about a great week of practice that lies ahead as well as performing well next weekend in the Liberty League playoffs."

The Saints will face #2 seed Union College Friday in the Liberty League Tournament hosted by Clarkson University in Potsdam. The winner will face the winner of #1 seed Clarkson and #4 seed RIT Saturday for the League Championship.
