Saints volleyball season ends in Liberty League tournament semifinal

Posted

Seniors Lexi Brown and Cristina Deschaine recorded eight kills each for the St. Lawrence University Volleyball team Friday night in the Liberty League Tournament Semifinal match against Union College.

The Saints (17-18) fell to Union (29-5) in three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-12.

"Tonight's loss was a disappointing one for our program," said Head Coach Shelly Roiger. "Win or lose, we always want to be able to say that we finished our season by playing our highest level of volleyball and we certainly did not do that tonight."

The Dutchwomen scored a 3-0 win to advance to the Tournament championship match Saturday at 4 pm against Clarkson University a 3-0 winner over RIT.

"A lot of the credit goes to Union as they played an outstanding match and regardless of what happens with tomorrow's championship match, I hope that the Liberty League gets the respect it deserves because both Clarkson and Union deserve to be in the NCAA tournament when the brackets come out on Monday," continued Roiger.

Brown and Deschaine led the attack with eight kills each. The kills total improved Brown's school record for career kills to 1,380 and moved Deschaine past the 1,000-career kill plateau as she finishes her career with 1,004 kills. Deschaine also had a pair of blocks and finishes the season with 114 which ranked third on the all-time list for blocks in a season at St. Lawrence.

Katie Kull handed out 24 assists and moved into third place in the Saints record book with 1,091 assists in a season while Mariah Dignan led the Saints with 13 digs and owns the #2 spot on the digs in a season list with a season total of 595.

"Our senior class had remarkable careers and one match doesn't define a season," said Roiger. "Lexi, Cristina, Mariah, and Marisa have had an enormous impact on this program and their contributions on the court, in the classroom, and in the leadership area will have a positive impact on the program for years to come.Despite a tremendous amount of injuries, we had a respectable season but I'm hoping the sting of this loss will serve as motivation in the off season for our returners. There is work to be done."
