The St. Lawrence University volleyball team bounced back from a tough Friday, as the Saints responded with an impressive 3-1 victory over Houghton College in at SUNY Canton on day two of the Canton Classic. The Saints defense was key in the win, as they used a 16.0-3.0 advantage in blocks to knock off the Highlanders 25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 25-20.

St. Lawrence improves to 11-8 on the season heading into a key conference weekend, while Houghton fell to 9-7 after splitting on Saturday (defeated RIT, 3-0). The Saints hit over .250 in all four games, including .444 and .483 in the second and third sets, respectively. Junior Cristina Deschaine was named to the Canton Classic's All-Tournament Team following a 15 kill, 5.0 block performance on Saturday.

"After a very disappointing day yesterday, we responded in a big way today. We talked about being resilient and getting back up after you've been slammed down and we did that today," said St. Lawrence head coach Shelly Roiger. "Sometimes losses can be good for a team if they respond in the correct way, and Friday's disappointments certainly provided us with a teachable moment in our season."

St. Lawrence assistant captain Mariah Dignan led the way defensively with 16 digs, while Marisa Turner chipped in 14. Cristina Deschaine had 5.0 total blocks and 15 kills, while Lexi Brown had a match-high 17 kills. The Saints showed their depth offensively, as Amanda Brooks and Maddy Ruehl had nine and eight kills respectively, and both Katie Kull and Katarina Marczeski had 24 assists each. Marczeski also chipped in a match-high four aces, while Masha Kolesnikova matched Deschaine's 5.0 blocks.

Houghton was led by Hattie Burgher's 12 kill performance, while Jaclyn Algier added 10. Anna Coryell racked up a match-high 30 assists and Laurel Wroblicky had 15 digs. However, the Highlanders were overmatched at the net, and that proved to be the difference in a match that each set was highly-competitive.

"We are looking forward to a great week of practice, a renewed commitment to excellence, and an exciting weekend of Liberty League play in the North Country next weekend," added Coach Roiger.

St. Lawrence will take on Union and Bard next Friday, Saturday, October 3 at Clarkson before hosting Skidmore and Vassar in the Burkman Gymnasium on Saturday, October 4.
