It all came down to the final shooter on Friday afternoon, as the St. Lawrence field hockey team fell 2-1 to Ithaca in a shootout after senior Bailey Sherwin's sixth goal of the season pushed the game to overtime.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the Liberty League. With the win, Ithaca improves to 10-5 and 3-3 in conference games. After entering the weekend in a four-way tie for third in the Liberty League standings, the Saints were eliminated from playoff contention with a Rensselaer win over William Smith.

"I think our team played extremely well today and I'm very proud of them." head coach Fran Grembowicz said. "Defensively we shut people down on corners and I thought we played a great 7 v 7 in overtime – we possessed the ball very well. I think we had a little bit of a let down to start the second half but kept our composure and obviously gave ourselves some opportunities to tie the game and come back."

After a scoreless first half, Ithaca opened the scoring with a goal from Meg Dowd, as she took a shot off a rebound that deflected and popped over the head of Saints' goalkeeper Sydney Giacin in the 57th minute.

Less than four minutes later, Sherwin carried into the circle, waited out Ithaca's goalkeeper Savanna Lenker and tucked the ball behind her on the short side to tie the game.

The Saints had an opportunity to win the game in regulation with a penalty corner after time had expired, but a drive from Melissa Grosshans on the far right side of the circle was blocked by an Ithaca defender and rolled out of play to send the game into overtime.

Giacin made one save in each of the overtime periods for St. Lawrence and finished with eight saves in the game. Lenker was also tasked to make a save in the second overtime and recorded four total stops on the day for the Bombers.

Sherwin opened the stroke-off with a goal for St. Lawrence and Giacin followed with a stop on Ithaca's Kimmy Briscoe. However, the Saints missed their next three stroke attempts while Ithaca made two to take a 2-1 lead before Lucy Stillman stepped up as the Saints' final shooter.

Stillman converted on her attempt with a lift from the left side of the cage after she worked around Lenker, but Maria McGloin beat Giacin on the Bombers' final shot to clinch the win.

"I think we played a very smart, skilled game today," Grembowicz added. "They left it all out on the field, and that's as much as you can ask for."

Ithaca finished with a 13-8 advantage in total shots and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Ithaca also took 13 penalty corners to the Saints' eight.

St. Lawrence will travel to Union on Sunday to finish out their Liberty League schedule.
