After winning the first set in a convincing manner, the St. Lawrence University volleyball team played four close sets falling in three of them in a 3-2 loss to Allegheny College Friday night on the first day of competition at the SUNY Brockport Invitational in Brockport.

The Saints (13-18) won the opening set 25-16. Allegheny battled back to post a 26-24 win in the second set and the Saints won the third set by the same score. The Gators forced the tie breaker set with a 25-23 win in the fourth set and scored the final three points of the fifth set to post a 15-12 victory to seal the match win.

"Tonight's match was the perfect level of competition for us," said head coach Shelly Roiger. "Allegheny forced us to play well and at times we were very impressive. I felt we lost our focus and hunger at times and quite honestly handed them two sets in the 20's. We will have to play with more sustained focus tomorrow and enjoy our last day of the season."

Masha Kolesnikova had a team-leading 17 kills and Grace Kelly added 16 kills, 13 digs and four blocks. Amanda Teppo recorded 11 kills and six blocks while Katie Kull handed out 54 assists and registered 13 digs. Marissa Parker had 10 kills and Ally Good led the defense with a career-high 30 digs.

The Saints will wrap up the 2016 season with a pair of matches Saturday in Brockport. St. Lawrence will face St. John Fisher at 12:30 p.m. and SUNY Fredonia at 2:30 p.m.
