Saints Vandenbeemt, McNeal to compete in NYS tennis finals tomorrow

Elkie Vandenbeemt and Morgan McNeal will represent the St. Lawrence University women's tennis team in the finals of the NYS Championships taking place in Ithaca, NY over the weekend. Vandenbeemt will face Alison Tepas of Nazareth at first singles, and will team up with McNeal to in the "A" Doubles final tomorrow morning.

Vandenbeemt earned three victories at first singles to make it to the finals to be played tomorrow morning at 9:00 am. The Hilton Head, SC native first worked past Christine Ho of Rochester in the opening round, 6-2, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, she faced Isabella Schoning (Hamilton), winning 6-3, 6-1. Her third win of the weekend came in the semifinal round as Vandenbeemt topped Casey Olsen of RPI, 6-1, 6-0.

Vandenbeemt and McNeal teamed up at "A" Doubles to knock off the top seeded team from RIT, Sara Bjork and Maite Vera Antelo, 8-5. The duo found themselves up 6-5, then broke away to earn the impressive victory. Yesterday, Vandenbeemt and McNeal opened the day with a win over Liz Detwiller and Meg Lee from Hamilton, 8-4, before blanking Ithaca's Marni Blumenthal and Haley Kusak, 8-0.

McNeal, the second seed in second singles, received a bye in Friday's opening round and then faced Ayaka Yoshino (Elmira) in the quarterfinals on 6-0, 6-4. In today's semifinals, she split sets with Skidmore before falling in the super tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, (10-5).

Also in action today was Anna Young, who won the consolation singles back-draw after losing a heartbreaking 6-3, 1-6 (14-12) decision to William Smith yesterday. She beat opponents from Nazareth (8-2) and Ithaca (8-3) en route to the back draw championship.

Laura Goldhar and Anna Young fell in the semifinals to Vassar's top seeded duo of Shayna Becker and Emily Hallewell, 8-2, in the "B Doubles". They started out with impressive victories over RIT (8-4) and Ithaca (8-0) on Friday.

Tori Copelas and Hallie Young also played well on Friday as they handled Ithaca's Kelley Fishback and Carly Siegel at "C" Doubles, 8-4, but then ran into trouble against Lindsay Kantor and Kelsey Van Noy of Vassar, losing a tight 8-6 battle.

At fourth singles, Laura Goldhar earned an opening round victory over Marni Blumenthal, 6-1, 6-2. She faced Ashley Lyon (William Smith) in the quarterfinal, falling 6-2, 6-3.

Hallie Young continued the winning trend on Friday, blanking RIT's Paige Baker, 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles. In Saturday's quarterfinal, she would fall to NYU, 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Bridget Fleming earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Krista Pagan in the opening round of sixth singles. She faced Kelsey Ham in the quarterfinal round on Saturday, falling 6-4, 6-3.
