The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team rebounded from yesterday's season-opening loss to down Stevenson University, 62-48, in the consolation game of the 30th Annual EC Invitational Tournament on Sunday in Emmanuel's Jean Yawkey Center. With the win, the Saints improve to 1-1 on the year while the loss drops the Mustangs to 0-2.

"I was really proud of the response we had from yesterday's game," said St. Lawrence head coach Dan Roiger. "We had more energy, played hard, and were very composed against an athletic team that gets after you. We really played team basketball, and we had a lot of assists and shots and made good shots. Every game we want to get better and today we did."

Trailing 7-4 early, St. Lawrence's sophomore guard Lauren Quattrocchi buried a three to tie things up four minutes into the action. Kara McDuffee gave the Saints their first lead of the game, when she stuck a jumper on the fast break.

With the game knotted at 14, Stevenson's Stephanie Martinez broke the tie with a free throw at the nine-minute mark and the Mustangs led by one. Mustangs junior guard Kyarra Harmon then picked off a pass at mid-court and layed the ball in on the break.

SLU junior Allison Cady drove the lane and hit a runner in the paint as St. Lawrence jumped back out in front, 18-17, forcing a Stevenson timeout with six and a half minutes remaining in the half.

St. Lawrence sophomore Gabi Hahn hit a jumper from the left wing and then another one from the right baseline, as the Saints pushed their lead to 24-20 with a minute to go in the half. Martinez knocked down a triple at the opposite end to bring the spread back to one, but the Saints quickly scored in the paint and took a 26-23 lead.

Hahn and Cady scored 6 points apiece to lead the Saints at the break. Martinez was the high-scorer for the Mustangs at the half with 7 points. St. Lawrence dominated the rebounding in the opening half, with 23 boards compared to just 14 for Stevenson.

The Saints began the second stanza with a 9-3 run, building their lead to nine points at 35-26 with 14:34 on the clock. St. Lawrence pushed its lead into double-digits midway through the second half. Caroline Dalton scored in the paint and Quattrocchi drained another three-pointer, bringing the spread to 45-28 at the ten-minute mark.

St. Lawrence held the Mustangs to just five points during the first ten minutes of the second half and lead by as many as 17 before Stevenson made a push to get back into the contest. An 11-3 run capped by a jumper from Harmon cut the Saints lead back to single digits at 48-39 with just over four minutes remaining but it would be the closest they would get. Over the final few minutes, St. Lawrence would outscore the Mustangs 12-9 en route to the 62-48 victory.

Cady finished the game with a team-high 14 points while Quattrocchi chipped tallied 12.

For the Mustangs, Martinez registered a game-high 16 points while Harmon added 13 points.
