The St. Lawrence University ended its spring trip to Orlando on a positive note, as it picked up its first win of the season with an 8-1 victory over Mount St. Mary on Friday afternoon.
The Saints swept the singles matches led by junior Michael Hayden and first-year student Alan Shortz at No. 1 (6-1, 6-2) and No.2 (6-0, 6-1), respectively. At No. 3, first-year student Thomas Luchars battled to a third-set tiebreaker and earned the win, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), (10-5). While junior Tom Timpone blanked his opponent at No.4, sophomore Matt Burke picked up a 6-0, 7-6 (4) win at No. 5. First-year student Sam Mullin rounded out the scoring as he clinched a win in the third-set tiebreaker of his No. 6 match to help the Saints sweep, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), (10-4).
In doubles play, the duo of Hayden and Luchars beat Greg Jacob and Stat Willand, 8-3, at No. 1, while senior Chris Rogers and Timpone teamed up to top Zach Conlon and Kevin Ryan, 8-1, at No. 3. Burke and Shortz dropped a tightly contested match at No. 2 by the score of 8-6.
The Saints will take the courts again on March 24 in Poughkeepsie, NY as they take on the Brewers of Vassar. The match is set to begin at 2:00pm.
