Saints sweep Brewers to take 3 of 4 on opening league weekend

St. Lawrence University's baseball team pounded out 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Vassar on Saturday, completing a 3-1 series against the Brewers to start the Liberty League season.

The Saint won game one on Saturday 11-2 as Joe riley went six innings to improve to 2-1 on the season and took game two 7-1 as rookie Andy Schreyack went the distance, giving up seven hits for his second win of the year.

The Saints, playing as the home team on Vassar's field, overcame an early 1-0 deficit in game one with three in the bottom of the second and went up 6-1 with another three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Vassar got a run back in the top of the sixth, but the Saints put it away with a five run burst in the bottom of the sixth.

Carter Franz was three for three with a double, Khifer O'Connor went two for four and Matt DeLucas was two for three with two runs driven in in game one. Rob Carman hit a two run double and Matt D'Auteuil tripled in a run for the Saint offense.

Schreyack scattered seven hits in game two allowing a first inning run and then shutting down the Brewers the rest of the way.

Franz went two for three, Kott had three hits and drove in two runs and Taylor Engle tripled and homered, driving in a pair of runs in the win,

The Saints, now 9-3, 3-1 in league play, return to action at Rochester Saturday and Sunday.
