The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday evening, a 67-57 defeat at the hands of the Cortland State Red Dragons in Cortland, NY. Senior Allison Cady led the Saints with 14 points and seven boards, while fellow captain Lauren Quattrocchi added 14 points, seven assists and three steals.

The Saints (2-1) owned a 34-32 lead at halftime thanks to 12 points from Cady in the opening 20:00 minutes. However, Cortland State (3-0) would rally in the second half behind Brittney Dumas and Erin Wolstenholme. Dumas finished with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds and Wolstenholme shot 7-of-10 for 16 points while St. Lawrence struggled from the floor in the second half (6-for-25).

"We played hard and had a great start, but couldn't sustain our mental intensity. At that point, we made too many mistakes and a good team like Cortland capitalized on those errors," said St. Lawrence head coach Dan Roiger. "Those are fixable mistakes and we can correct them in practice soon."

St. Lawrence took a six point lead at 7:38 of the first half thanks to a three by rookie Cara Waterson, while fellow first-years Jenny Scudder and Kaelyn Kohlasch followed with jumpers to stretch the lead to 10 at 21-11. The Red Dragons would chip away at the deficit, and a buzzer-beating three pointer by Cassidy Chapko gave the home team momentum heading into the second half down just two, 34-32.

Cortland would capitalize on the big shot, opening the second half on a 13-4 run to take a 45-38 lead early in the period. St. Lawrence answered, as the two teams exchanged the lead midway through the frame, with Caroline Dalton putting the Saints on top 51-50 with 10:04 to play. However, the visitors would go ice-cold in the remaining 9:56 to play, shooting just 1-for-10 down the stretch as Cortland went on a 17-6 run to cruise to the 67-57 victory.

St. Lawrence will have some time off before returning to action for the 2014-15 home opener against Plattsburgh State on Tuesday, December 2 at 6:00pm.
