The St. Lawrence University volleyball team split on the opening day of competition at the RIT Tournament in Rochester, NY. The Saints opened up with a 3-1 victory (27-25, 25-11, 22-25, 25-22) over Brockport state before falling 3-0 to Nazareth (25-19, 25-17, 25-23) in the nightcap.
"We had moments of very good volleyball throughout the day," said St. Lawrence Head Coach Shelly Roiger. "Our defense made great reads against Brockport, but we were often undisciplined. Against a very solid Nazareth team, we showed poor ball control on our side of the net. When we passed well, good things resulted, however we spent much of the match out of system. We need to continue to improve in preparation for our conference play."
The Saints, who were led by seniors Nyasha Miller and Liz Grogan, move to 7-5 on the season.
Miller recorded 20 kills and 40 digs on the day while Grogan added 18 kills and four blocks. First-year student Jenna Street tallied a total of 57 assists over the two matches.
St. Lawrence will battle Geneseo State and St. John Fisher tomorrow in the second day of the RIT Tournament. The matches are schedule to start at 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm, respectively.
