The St. Lawrence University softball team was tabbed in finish third in the 2014 Liberty League preseason coaches' poll with 27 points. Rochester, the 2013 regular-season champion, was picked to finish first with 34 points and four first-place votes, while tournament championship RPI was slated second (32 – 3).
Rochester finished the 2013 season with a 23-19 overall record and went 8-2 in league play, while RPI boasted a 26-15 record and 7-3 record in conference. Both teams return a Player of the Year from a season ago in the Yellowjackets' Nina Korn and Engineers Gillian McCarthy.
The Saints return five All-League performers from the 2013 campaign during which they finished 22-17 overall – establishing a new single-season victory record – and went 6-4 against conference opponents. All-league returners include first team selections Natasha Bell and Kyle Plimpton, second-teamer Leslie Stratton and honorable mentions Rebecca Allen and Aisha O'Connor.
Plimpton is also the reigning Liberty League Pitcher of the Year, after she led the league with a 1.63 ERA, 194 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .209. She finished with an 11-10 record and allowed just 34 earned runs in 145 2/3 innings.
The Saints and second-year head coach Elisa Van Kirk will open the season with a game against Heidelberg on March 8 in Clermont, Fla.
