The St. Lawrence University softball team improved to 8-2 on Thursday, sweeping its competition at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, FL. In the opening game against Lasell, the Saints scored four unanswered runs in the seventh inning to secure the 6-2 victory. Against Olivet in the second game, sophomore Becky Allen delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning that gave the Saints the 4-3 win.

Junior Lauren Weisbarth led the Saints offensively on the day as she went 3-for-5 with two runs, including two RBI singles in the extra innings of game two, while sophomore Leslie Stratton was 3-for-8 with a run and three RBIs. Junior Chelsea Cavellier was 2-for-7 with two runs and two RBIs, including her first collegiate home run.

McGinley earned the win against Lasell, giving up only six hits in 6.0 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. First-year student Kyle Plimpton recorded her third save of the season as she came in as relief in the seventh inning, then earned the 4-3 win against Olivet as she gave up six hits and one earned run, while striking out 15 and walking two.

In the opening game of the day, Lasell struck first to take a 1-0 lead, but sophomore Khalshia White knotted the score at 1-1 in the third inning when she smacked a solo homerun over the right field fence. The Saints took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when O'Connor ripped a triple down the right field line and scored on Stratton's single to right. The Lasers, though, answered with a run of their own in bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 2-2.

The Saints scored four runs in the top of the seventh, and then held on for the 6-2 victory. O'Connor, Stratton and Cavellier hit consecutive doubles to take a 5-2 lead, and an RBI single by sophomore Cailyn Welsh capped the scoring at 6-2.

In the second game of the day, Olivet pitcher Jessica Duell kept St. Lawrence's bats silent for much of the game as she forced 17 fly outs and allowed only four hits through eight innings. Plimpton, however, kept St. Lawrence in the game despite several Saints miscues in the final innings. The Buffalo, NY native allowed only one earned run and struck out 15 batters, and the Saints mustered up the offensive plays when they were most needed to stick out the victory.

In the eighth inning, both teams saw a runner on third base with one out but failed to score her. Olivet capitalized in the ninth inning, however, scoring on a single to left field. When it was St. Lawrence's turn, Weisbarth came through with her second game-tying RBI single of the contest to even the score at 3-3. Allen delivered a two-out walk-off RBI single to propel the Saints to the 4-3 victory.

Cavellier opened the scoring as she launched a solo home run over the left field fence in the first inning to give her team a1-0 lead. Olivet tied the game in the fourth inning, but Plimpton buckled down to strike out three consecutive batters, stranding runners on second and third base. Olivet threatened again in the sixth with the bases loaded and two out. An errant throw on a double play attempt allowed the Comets to score and take a 2-1 lead.

After coming up empty in the sixth, the Saints looked to rally in the seventh inning as senior Chelsea Hanno drew a walk and advanced to third on two passed balls by the catcher. Weisbarth ripped an RBI single to left field that plated Hanno and forced extra innings.

The Saints will conclude their spring trip tomorrow with games against Richard Stockton and St. Joseph's College at 9am and 11am at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
