The St. Lawrence University softball team earned a split on Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, FL. The Saints, now 6-2 overall, opened the day with a tough 8-1 loss to the College of Wooster, then bounced back to shutout Elms College by the score of 8-0 in six innings.

Junior catcher Chelsea Cavellier led the Saints offensively on the day as she went 5-for-9 with a run and two RBIs. First-year student Aisha O'Connor was 4-for-7 with a run and an RBI, while junior Lauren Weisbarth and sophomore Cailyn Welsh were each 3-for-6 on the day. Sophomore Becky Allen had three RBIs in game two.

Junior captain Liz McGinley earned the 8-0 shutout victory over Elms in game two, while first-year student Kyle Plimpton suffered the 8-1 loss to Wooster in the previous game.

Against Elms, the errorless recorded 17 hits to back up McGinley's two-hit shutout performance with seven strikeouts and no walks. St. Lawrence opened its scoring in the first inning, as Cavellier hit home O'Connor to give her team the 1-0 lead. Adding to the margin in the third, sophomore Leslie Stratton and Cavellier posted back-to-back singles and advanced home on RBIs by Allen and Welsh to bring the score to 3-0.

Sophomore Caroline Kieltyka kept things rolling in the fourth when she singled to leftfield. The Saints loaded the bases on a beautiful slap hit from the left side by Weisbarth and a bunted single by O'Connor. Allen singled to right to bat in two more RBIs and give the Saints a 5-0 cushion.

In the next inning, O'Connor ripped a single to left field that allowed Kieltyka to score. The Saints made it 7-0 when Stratton followed with a single down the right field line to bring home Weisbarth, who got on base with a single of her own.

Senior Darcy Buckingham delivered a pinch-hit single in the sixth inning that scored sophomore Khalshia White and brought the score to 8-0. After McGinley and the Saints defense got three quick outs in the bottom of the inning, the mercy rule came into effect and ended the game with the final score of 8-0 after six innings of play.

Earlier in the day, Wooster used a seven-run fourth inning to top the Saints as Gina Pirolozzi earned the win on the mound, allowing nine hits and one run while striking out six. Plimpton, who kept the Scots off the board through three innings, gave up 13 hits and six earned runs in the loss while striking out seven.

Wooster broke open the game in the fourth frame when it scored seven runs on six hits and an error to take a 7-0 lead. In the fifth inning, St. Lawrence looked to answer with the bases loaded, but Wooster's center fielder made a nice play at the fence on Allen's hit to keep the Saints scoreless.

After the Fighting Scots tacked a run onto their lead in the seventh, the Saints mustered a run as Cavellier recorded her third hit of the game to score Weisbarth. Pirolozzi and the Scots, however, got out of the inning without any further damage to bring the game to its final score of 8-1.

St. Lawrence will take on Lasell and Olivet tomorrow morning at 9:00am and 11:00am at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
