Saints softball team shutout as Rochester sweeps

Playing its first games since returning from spring training in Clermont, Florida, St. Lawrence dropped a pair of games 9-0, 8-0 to Liberty League powerhouse Rochester at Cornell University on Saturday.

Game one was scoreless heading into the bottom of the third inning, when Rochester notched its first run. The Yellowjackets added two more in the fourth and broke it open in the fifth, putting four runs across to build a 7-0 lead. Nina Korn's home run for Rochester in the bottom of the sixth pushed the lead to 9-0 and ended the game by virtue of the mercy rule.

Becky Allen finished 2-2 with a walk, while Leslie Stratton was 2-3 for the Saints.

Game two progressed in similar fashion, as the Yellowjackets gradually built a lead before exploding for four runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach for St. Lawrence.

In the top of the fifth, first-year Kelly Burke spoiled Eleni Wechsler's no-hit bid when her infield popup dropped in just behind second base. That would stand as the Saints only hit of the game.

Kyle Plimpton, now 3-6 on the season, was the pitcher of decision in both contests. She struck out a combined nine batters.

With Sunday's matchup against RIT postponed to a later date, the Saints will next play at SUNY Canton on Wednesday April 9. Continue to check saintsathletics.com for schedule updates.
