The St. Lawrence University softball team earned a split against Potsdam State today in Canton, NY.  The Saints fell in the first game 4-3 in eight innings before bouncing back to take game two, 6-5.?St. Lawrence improves to 8-8 on the season while Potsdam moves to 6-6.

First-year student Khalshia White led the Saints in game one as she went 1-for-2 with two walks and scored two runs.  Classmate Caroline Kieltyka had two RBIs, while sophomore Lauren Weisbarth went 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a walk.

Stratton and Kieltyka led the Saints in the second game as they both went 3-for-4 followed by first-year student Becky Allen and sophomore Chelsea Cavellier who went 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.

In the opening game, the Saints struck first as Kieltyka singled in the bottom of the first inning to score White.  The Bears would not answer until the fourth inning when Heather Johnson plated Molly Zehler off a base hit to tie the score 1-1.

Taking advantage of some Potsdam miscues, the Saints loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning, however Bears pitcher Ashley Thayer was able to pitch out of the jam to keep the score even at 1-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kieltyka doubled to center, scoring White to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.

The Bears responded with a run in the top of the sixth, before the Saints turned a double play to get out of the inning.

The Saints produced base runners in both the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to push any runners across the plate, forcing the game into extra innings.  The Bears were able to plate two runners in the top of the eighth to take their first lead of the game at 4-2.  Despite a triple by sophomore Lauren Weisbarth that scored junior Darcy Buckingham, Thayer was able to pitch out of the inning earning the 4-3 win.

In game two, St. Lawrence took an early lead when first-year student Leslie Stratton singled and later scored on a Potsdam error.  The Bears came back with two runs in the top of the second, but the Saints were able to recapture the lead at 4-2 in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs off of four hits while taking advantage of Potsdam miscues.

The Bears made it 4-3 when Pawlowski singled to left field, scoring Grebinger.  The Saints, however, responded with a two run inning when sophomore Chelsea Cavellier doubled to right field and was plated by a double from Kieltyka.  The New Britain, CT native subsequently scored on a Potsdam error to bring the score to 6-3.

Though the Bears were able to score two runs in the top of the seventh, McGinley was able to strand the tying run on third base when she honed in on Amanda Perry's hard hit up the middle and got the out at first.

McGinley earned the win to improve to 5-0 as she allowed three earned runs off nine hits while striking out five batters.  Pawlowski was credited with the loss and falls to 2-3 as she allowed 10 hits in five innings.

The Saints will travel to Plattsburgh State on Wednesday, April 6th.  The double-header is scheduled to start at 3:00pm.
