The St. Lawrence University softball team was unable to complete a comeback bid after falling behind the University of Rochester early in the second game as the Saints were swept by the Yellowjackets, 6-0 and 10-6, in a Liberty League doubleheader at Saints Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the sweep, St. Lawrence and Rochester finish the conference schedule tied in the Liberty League standings with a 6-6 record. The Saints and Yellowjackets are currently tied for fourth in the Liberty League standings and will have to await the results from the final two series on the conference schedule to learn if they will get one of the four spots in the conference tournament.

Eleni Wechsler struck out nine in a complete game four-hit shutout and went 2-for-4 with a double and a three run triple in the opener for Rochester, while Lydia Petricca was 3-for-4 with two RBI singles.

Hannah Sears, the Saints' lone senior, got the start in the circle on senior day and allowed just one run in the first four innings. After being relieved in the fifth inning, she reentered the game with the Saints trailing 5-0 and gave up just one more run, allowing just four hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.

Elle Gray was 2-for-3 for the Saints in the opener.

The Saints once again fell behind 6-0 in the nightcap, with Rochester scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to build what looked to be an insurmountable lead. But the Saints responded with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth to make the game close, with Abrianna Schlickenmayer, Gray and Angelina Carney hitting RBI singles.

The Yellowjackets came right back in the sixth to add three more runs and then tacked on one more in the seventh. The Saints scored two in the last half of the inning but were unable to complete the comeback.

Gray was 3-for-3 with a double; her RBI single in the fifth was her 30th RBI of the season, which ties a school record set by Michelle Circelli '03 in 2003. Caitlin Syphurs' two-run single in the seventh inning also lifted her RBI season total to 30. Emma Reakes was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk for the Saints.

Petricca went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Jocelynn Blackshear was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI for the Yellowjackets. Harleigh Kaczegowicz went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, and Courtney Semkewyc was 2-for-4.

Madison Mitchell took the loss for St. Lawrence, allowing two runs in 0.2 innings. Allie Courtright pitched 3.2 innings of relief, allowing four runs on six hits, and Sears wrapped up her Liberty League career by getting the final eight outs for the Saints.

Sam Malecki got the win for Rochester, allowing four runs in 4.2 innings. Elizabeth Bourne allowed two runs in two innings of relief, and Wechsler got the game's final out.

St. Lawrence, now 20-11 overall on the year, will host SUNY Canton in a non-league doubleheader on Tuesday.
