Saints softball splits, finishes Florida trip 10-2

The St. Lawrence University softball team finished off its spring break trip to Clermont, Florida, with a split on Friday, beating Oberlin 7-6 before falling to Allegheny 3-2.

The Saints will return to campus with a 10-2 record and set program records for most wins, fewest losses, best winning percentage (.833), most runs (101), highest scoring average (8.42) and largest run differential (+4.83) for a spring break trip.

"The success we had on this trip is really a credit to all the hard work all 16 players put into every practice day in and day out," said head coach Elisa Van Kirk. "It was a tremendous team effort from start to finish and I couldn't be more proud of the team."

Madison Mitchell improved to 7-0 in the circle in the opener, allowing two runs on six hits in four innings, with three strikeouts and one walk. Allie Courtwright pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout.

After allowing single runs in the first and third innings, the Saints' offense exploded in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. Elle Gray worked an RBI walk, Caitlin Syphurs hit a two-run fielder's choice, Emma Reakes added an RBI single and Angelina Carney had an RBI groundout.

Syphurs added an RBI single in the fourth, and Carney scored on an error in the sixth.

Deanna Sullivan was 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Saints' offense in the opener, while Grace Evans was 3-for-3 with four RBI and Emma Downing was also 3-for-3 to lead the Yeomen, who fell to 3-10.

St. Lawrence fell behind Allegheny 3-0 in the final game of the trip, but scored two runs in the fifth make it a one-run game. Mylea Mann hit an RBI double and later scored on an error, but Allegheny pitcher Allison Cabo got out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth and allowed just a two-out single in the seventh for the complete-game victory.

Carney was 2-for-2 to lead the Saints at the plate, while Courtwright allowed just two hits in 3.2 innings in relief.

Paige Blinkiewicz led the Gators, going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in the second inning. Jessica Gordon was 2-for-3 for Allegheny, which improved to 4-8.
