Saints softball drops pair to Colby, Allegheny

The St. Lawrence softball team put together a two-run rally in the top of the seventh inning against Allegheny to spoil Gators' pitcher Allison Cabo's no-hit bid, but it was too little too late, as the Saints fell 3-2 in their second game of the day. The Saints also dropped the early morning game against Colby to fall to 3-5 on the season with four games remaining on their spring training trip.

A five-run sixth inning helped Colby come-from-behind to edge the Saints, 5-3, in the opening game of the day. Sophomore Emma Reakes had a shot to tie it with two outs a runner on in the top of the seventh and sent a long fly ball to the warning track, but the Mules left fielder tracked it down to end the game and seal the win for Colby.

Hannah Sears pitched five innings of shutout softball before loading the bases with no outs to start the sixth. She was briefly relieved by first-year Allie Courtwright, who faced two batters – walking one and allowing a single to the other – before returning to the game with a 3-2 score and the bases still loaded.

The Copake, N.Y. native got two quick fly outs, but runs scored on each giving Colby a 4-3 lead and an error on a pop fly to the middle infield allowed the fifth and final Mules run to score.

The Saints had built a 3-0 lead to that point thanks to an RBI Mylea Mann double to right in the third that plated fellow first-year Madison Yarborough as well as a RBI single by Courtwright to score Kelsey Murphy that same inning. Jordan Sheridan scored the third run for St. Lawrence on a single by Murphy down the right field line.

Murphy and Courtwright led the Saints with two hits apiece in game one, while Sears finished with five hits and three earned runs allowed and five strikeouts.

In game two, Allegheny scored a run in the second and two in the fourth to carry a 3-0 lead into the top half of the final frame with Cabo still pitching a shutout against the Saints – who had only had one base runner up until that point.

Madison Yarborough led off the inning with a four-pitch walk and after a pair of quick outs left her on first with two down, Courtwright hit a single down the right field line for St. Lawrence's first hit of the day. With two on and two out, Emma Reakes cranked an RBI double to left center to bring Yarborough around to score and cut the Gators lead to 3-1.

Laura Finley followed with a single to left center that plated Courtwright for the Saints second run, but pinch hitter Jacqueline Dufour struck out to strand two and end the game.

Courtwright went the distance on the mound for the Saints in game two, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while recording six strikeouts. Cabo finished with three hits, two earned runs and seven strikeouts in the win for Allegheny.

The Saints will play Oberlin and the University of Maine – Farmington on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively at Hancock Park in Clermont.
