Saints' softball bats silenced by red-hot RPI pitchers

The St. Lawrence University softball team ran into two hot pitchers on Saturday, as Sarah Harms and Jamie Cleasby both threw complete game shutouts to lead RPI, ranked third in the NCAA Division III Northeast Region, to a sweep of the Saints, 3-0 and 1-0, in a Liberty League doubleheader in Troy, New York, on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: RPI 3, St. Lawrence 0

St. Lawrence outhit the Engineers, 5-4, but the Saints were unable get a run across against Harms, who allowed five this and three walks with three strikeouts.

Veronica DeStefano hit an RBI double to center field, then scored on an RBI single by Victorica Greco to give the Engineers a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Steph Cavallaro give RPI a 3-0 edge with a run-scoring infield single in the fourth.

Saints' first baseman Angelina Carney (pictured above) was the only player with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double. Skylar Hein had a hit and a walk for the Saints.

Madison Mitchell took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks in 2.2 innings. Allie Courtwright pitched the final 3.1 innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits with five walks and one strikeout.

Game 2: RPI 1, St. Lawrence 0

Deanna Sullivan hit a leadoff double to right field for the Saints, but was thrown out trying to extend the double to a triple. Cleasby faced the minimum through four innings, erasing a one-out walk with a double play in the fourth.

The Saints put two runners on base in the fifth, with Elle Gray leading off with a single and Hein drawing a walk, but Cleasby got the next two batters out with a groundout and a strikeout to preserve the shutout, then retired the Saints in order in the next two innings.

Chelsea Elliot drove in the Engineers' only run with an RBI double in the second inning and was 2-for-2 at the plate.

Caroline Young also pitched brilliantly for the Saints, allowing just one run on four hits with no walks.

Records: St. Lawrence (12-16 overall, 4-8 Liberty Leauge); RPI (23-9, 13-1).
