Saints slalom skiers Visconti, Stenicka earn Top-10’s at Bates Carnival

The St. Lawrence University alpine ski team opened its 2015 season this weekend at the Bates Carnival at Sunday River in Maine. Seniors Allison Visconti and Nick Stenicka each earned a top-10 finish in the slalom on Saturday to pace the Saints.

Stenicka finished in a tie for 10th place in the men's slalom on Saturday with a time of 1:46.05. His second run time of 50.13 seconds was fourth in the entire field and landed the Winter Park, CO native his first collegiate top-10. He was joined in the scoring by Kei Kullberg and Dan Martin, who were 30th and 33rd respectively, to land St. Lawrence in ninth place in the men's race.

Michael Williams (34th), Hayes Graham (35th) and Taber Engelken (38th) also raced for the Scarlet and Brown in Saturday's race, which was won by Gabriel Coulet of UVM in 1:44.75. Coulet's victory led the Catamounts to the team title as well.

Visconti's seventh place finish in the women's slalom is the Ridgefield, CT native's fifth career top-10 showing at St. Lawrence and came with a combined time of 1:50.10. She had a pair of top-11 runs and helped her team to seventh place in the standings with the help of Maria Hillenbrand (26th) and Amie Lonza (40th). Sydney Henegan (DNF) and Eliza Cowie (DNF) also competed for St. Lawrence.

The women's slalom was won by UVM thanks to an individual victory by Kristina Riis-Johannessen in 1:47.12.

Hillenbrand and Graham were the top St. Lawrence finishers in Friday's giant slalom races, with both teams finishing in the same team positions as Saturday. Hillenbrand was 28th in 2:19.82, and was joined by Henegan (40th) and Lonza (43rd) in the scoring, while Visconti did not finish her opening run.

Meanwhile, Graham was 28th in the men's GS in 2:14.92 and was joined in the scoring by Engelken (30th) and Martin (31st). The trio scored 43.0 points, while Kullberg (34th) and Stenicka (40th) also raced for St. Lawrence.

UVM also won the women's GS thanks to an individual victory by Elise-woien Tefre, while Middlebury's Robert Cone won the men's title and paced the Panthers to the team championship.

St. Lawrence will be in action again next weekend when it heads to the 2015 UVM Carnival on January 23 and 24 at Stowe Mountain.
