Junior defenseman Gavin Bayreuther broke the scoring ice midway through the second period and sophomore goaltender Kyle Hayton recorded his sixth career shutout as 15th ranked St. Lawrence University beat 19th ranked Clarkson University 3-0 in the 200th game in the rivalry between the two North Country neighbors.

St. Lawrence improved to 7-3-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in ECAC play while Clarkson is now 5-3-1 and 0-2-1, sustaining its first loss in Canton in the last six games. Hayton, who set the Saint program record for season shutouts last year, made 32 saves for his second career shutout of the Golden Knights.

Bayreuther scored his sixth career game winner and second this season as the Saints won the first matchup in which both teams were in the top 20 nationally since January of 2007 in a hard-hitting and intense contest.

"It was a typical Clarkson game," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "Both teams bring their best. I really liked our 60 minute game. We learned a lesson against RPI…tonight wasn't a real pretty game, but we got pucks deep and stuck to our game plan."

Neither team scored in a close checking first period which saw Clarkson with a 13-6 advantage on shots on goal, but Bayreuther, the Saints' leading scorer, scored his fourth of the season when his shot along the ice beat Clarkson goalie Steve Perry inside the far post at 11:03 with Woody Hudson setting up a screen in front.

The Saints increased the lead to 2-0 3:48 into the second period when sophomore defenseman Nolan Gluchowski made a great play to keep the puck in the offensive zone and sent it to sophomore wing Joe Sullivan, who scored his third of the year, snapping a shot under the crossbar from the slot. Defenseman Eric Sweetman completed the scoring when he took a pass from Alex Hagen and beat Perry high on the glove side through traffic at 11:52.

The Saints, who killed off 1:34 of five-on-three power play in the first period, killed off two more Clarkson power plays in the third and while the Knights pulled Perry for an extra attacker with 1:13 to go, they could not get one past Hayton.

"There were not a lot of penalties, which I like. They just let us play. I thought positionally we played very well and didn't give up a ton," Carvel added. "We didn't get a ton either, but we took advantage of what we got.".
