Saints riding team have regional point lead after 1st weekend of shows

Junior Jesse Fortier earned high point rider honors in both opening weekend shows and the St. Lawrence University riding team, regional high point team in each of the last five years, came out of week one of Intercollegiate Horse Show Association competition with the regional lead.

A strong Saturday showing vaulted the Saints to the top of the point standings as they won the first of two shows hosted by Geneseo with 45 points with CazenoviaJesse Fortier was high point rider in both opening weekend shows and Geneseo tying for second with 33 and Oswego fourth with 32. While things did not go quite as well in Sunday's second show, the Saints hold a three point lead over Cazenovia and are up eight on Geneseo heading into Nov 7 and 8 shows at Geneseo and Cazenovia. Cazenovia won Sunday's show with 47 points, Geneseo was second with 41 and the Saints third with 38.

Fortier started his junior season in fine form, winning both open over fences and open on the flat in both of the weekend shows. Senior Alyssa Bokor was reserve high point rider on Saturday after winning her class of open over fences and finishing second in intermediate on the flat.

The Saints swept the open over fences classes on Saturday with Mackenzie Alderman joining Fortier and Bokor in earning blue ribbons. Other Saturday winners included Lillie Smith and Caitlin Doocy, both first in novice fences, Laruen Nolan first in novice flat and Fiona Fahey first in walk trot. The Saints had five first place finishes and two seconds in the team competition.

Elizabeth Pagliuca added a second in novice flat, Manon Edeline was second in walk-trot-canter, Lauren Nolan was third in intermediate fences and Anne Lufkin was third in novice flat in other top finishes for the Saints.

Joining Fortier in the winner's circle on Sunday were Bokor, first in open fences, Doocy and Maggie Whitney, first in novice fences, Lily Barnard, first in novice flat, and Haley O'Brien and Emma Levy, who each won their class of walk-trot-canter.

Cleo Mueller was second in intermediate fences, Bokor was second in open flat, Lufkin and Doocy second in novice flat, Casey Rost and Edeline were second in beginner walk-trot-canter and Madeline Coakley was second in walk-trot on Sunday. Alderman finished third in both open fences and open flat, Lillie Smith was third in intermediate fences and Emily Crabtree was third in novice fences. Saint alumni riders Taylor Moon and Casey Zuraitis traded wins in Sunday's show with Moon first and Zuraitis second in alumni fences and Zuraitis first and Moon second in alumni on the flat.
