The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team outscored Colgate University 3-0 in the third period of Saturday's ECAC Hockey showdown in Hamilton, NY. The Saints' used the three goals to rally past the Raiders by the score of 5-3 and earn a weekend split in Central New York.

All five of St. Lawrence's goals came from its sophomore class, as Michelle Ng and Kelly Sabatine each had a goal and an assist, while classmates Kayla Sullivan, Jamie Goldsmith and Brooke Fernandez each scored in the game. First-year student Rylee Smith added a pair of helpers for the visitors, who improved to 8-7-2 on the season. Meanwhile, Colgate suffered the loss and falls to 6-12-0 despite having a 3-2 lead after 40:00 minutes.

"We had a huge effort in the third to get some key goals on the power play, while Maxie (Weisz) made some great saves as well," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "We had some fortunate bounces that went our way, but overall, this is a good result in a rink that has been tough to get points."

Weisz finished with 22 saves in the game, while Colgate's Kimberly Sass made 21 stops.

Sabatine gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at 7:44 of the first period, with assists going to senior captain Karell Emard and Smith. However, Jessica Hootz responded for Colgate at 13:26 to knot the scoring at 1-1 after one period. Taylor Volpe and Jocelyn Simpson had helpers on the goal.

The Raiders took their first lead at 2-1 when Rachel Walsh scored a power play goal only 1:23 into the second period. Later in the frame, Goldsmith scored an unassisted goal at 15:04 to once again tie the score at 2-2. Colgate would snag a 3-2 cushion heading into the third period, though, when Kristi-Lynn Pollock scored at 18:10 of the second period to cap the stanza's scoring. Amanda Kirwan got the play started and was credited with the assist.

St. Lawrence would stun Colgate early in the third with back-to-back goals only 30 seconds apart to take a 4-3 lead. Ng tied the score on the power play at 4:04, with assists going to rookie Bailey Habscheid and junior Alley Bero. Only 30 seconds later at 4:34, Sullivan was celebrating a goal to put St. Lawrence on top by one. Ng assisted on what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

Colgate's best chance to tie the score came midway through the third period, when Jessi Waters was given a penalty shot on Weisz. However, Waters shot the puck wide, keeping the visitors on top 4-3.

The Scarlet and Brown would put the game away with 2:53 to play when Fernandez capped the scoring with a power play goal that beat Sass for a 5-3 advantage. Sabatine and Smith picked up assists on the insurance goal, as St. Lawrence celebrated a two-goal victory.

The two teams combined for 30 minutes of penalties, as St. Lawrence finished 2-of-7 on the power play while Colgate was 1-of-4 with the extra skater. Each team closed with 26 shots in the contest.

St. Lawrence will return home for a non-conference series with nationally-ranked No. 3 Mercyhurst next weekend, Friday and Saturday, December 10 and 11 for the final games of the 2010 calendar year. The opening game against the Lakers is set to begin on Friday at 7:00pm at Appleton Arena.
