Saints Payton 11th in men's NYSCTC Decathlon

St. Lawrence University sophomore Chris Payton stood fifth at the midpoint of the NYSCTC decathlon at Ithaca on Sunday, but faded to 11th overall in the final standings. Josh Martell finished 18th in the event, the first of the NYSCTC Championship which will be completed at the Merrick Pinkard Track at SLU on Friday and Saturday.

Payton accumulated 3016 points through the first five events with second place finishes in the 100 meters and the 400 meters in Sunday's events. Payton scored well in teh 110 hurdles wiith 581 points and te 1500 with a time of 4:57.90 for 572 points, but did not fare as well in the discus, pole vault and javelin on day two. He had 276 ponits for a 20.21 discus throw, 298 for a 2.75 pole vault and 335 for a 32.54 javelin throw.

Martell, 20th after the first five events, won the javelin with a 53.01 meter throw for 633 points to move up two spots from his first day standing. He also picked up 594 points with a 4:54.21 time in the 1500.

Payton ran 11.53 in the 100, worth 746 points and 51. 47 in the 400 which scored 748 points. He had a 6.19 meters long jump (628), threw the shot 8.26 meters (382) and high jumped 1.66 meters (512). Martell ran 11.99 in the 100, had a 5.79 meters long jump, 8.32 meter shot put and ran 56.58 in the 400, but no-heighted in the high jump, which dropped him down the standings.

The event concludes with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 on Monday and scores from the top eight finishers will count toward the team championship in the NYSCTC Outdoor Championships to be held at SLU on Friday and Saturday.

In addition to the multi-event, several other Saint athletes prepped for the NYSCTC meet by competing in the Big Red Outdoor Invitational at Cornell on Sunday.

Will Moynihan had the top finish of the day for the Saint men with a 13th in the steeplechase with Tyler Baldino finishing 17th. Adam McNichol was 19th in the 200 and 27th in the 400 while Vince Maniscalco was 34th in the 400, Corey Hahnl was 33rd, Brett Smith 37th and Albert Scardera 39th in the 800 and Bryan Geiger 27th in the 400 hurdles. In field event competition, Bryce DeBoer was 25th in the hammer and 24th in the discus and Alimamy Kabia was 20th in the long jump with Maniscalco 22nd.

The NYSCTC Outdoor Championship will begin at 2 p.m. Friday and continue through Saturday at the Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field Complex.
