Despite outshooting Lebanon Valley College in the opening game of the William Smith Classic on Saturday afternoon, the St. Lawrence field hockey team fell 2-0 to the Flying Dutchmen in Geneva, New York.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-4 on the season, while Lebanon Valley improves to 2-3.

Maggie Green led the Saints with four shots, while Melissa Grosshans has a team-best three shots on goal on Saturday.

Cecile Kat scored the game's first goal and the eventual game winner with a blast from the left wing on a Lebanon Valley penalty corner to beat the Saints' Lexi Oskam in the 11th minute. Kat also assisted on the Dutchmen's second goal in the 23rd minute, which was scored by Mikayla Poole.

The Saints outshot the Dutchmen 7-3 in the second half, including three scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of the game while trying to get on the board, but were stopped by Lebanon Valley goalkeeper Victoria ByDeley, who finished with six saves in the shutout win.

Saints' netminders Oskam and Sydney Giacin combined to make three saves.

Not only did the Saints outshoot the Dutchmen, but they also had a 15-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities, limiting their opponent to just one penalty corner and three shots in the final 35 minutes.

The Saints will play Manhattanville College on Sunday, Sept. 16 in the second game of the William Smith Classic at 2 p.m.
