he St. Lawrence University men's track and field team opened the 2013 outdoor season in impressive fashion on Saturday, as the Saints won the Rochester Invitational at Fauver Stadium in Rochester, NY. Strong performances in the 5000m run and 400m hurdles highlighted the afternoon on the track, while Josh Martell earned a victory in the javelin throw.

The Saints were 1st of 13 teams on Saturday, as the hosting Yellowjackets of Rochester were second and the RIT Tigers finished third.

"We threw down some quality marks for our first outdoor event of the season," said St. Lawrence head coach John Newman. "We had several competitors earn PR's in various events. All in all, it was a great first meet for our program across the event areas."

The trio of Scott Smolensky, Trevor Bibb and Steve Petramale took the top three spots in the 5000m run, with Smolensky winning with a time of 15:29.43. Junior Landen Elliott-Knaggs also scored for the Saints in the 5000m, with the Saints' quartet combining for 27 points in the event.

Senior Jacob Fredericks had a solid afternoon, as he took second place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.63. The time is in the top-5 in the country for Division III and is a new University record. Fredericks also scored with a fifth place finish in the 400 hurdles and ran the final leg of the 1600 relay, which was second overall along with teammates Christopher Payton, Harrison Sloan and Nicholas Crawford.

Sloan and Crawford each won races on the track, as Sloan's time of 1:57.52 took the 800m run and Crawford won the 400 hurdles in 55.77. Other scorers included Corey Hahnl and Zach Nelson, who were fifth and seventh in the 1500m run, Omaru Kabia (5th, 100 dash) and Payton (7th, 400 hurdles).

Three Saints scored in the jumps for the Scarlet and Brown, including Brian Kane's third place showing in the high jump (1.89m). Alimamy Kabia and Adrian Wilson finished fourth and eighth, respectively, in the long jump.

Martell's victory in the javelin delivered 10 points for St. Lawrence in the throws with a mark of 48.63m. Senior co-captain A.J. Blaisdell was third in the hammer (46.32m) and fourth in the discus (36.09m), while first-year Scott Kasson was runner-up in the shot put (13.18) and sixth in the discus.

St. Lawrence will return to Rochester, NY next weekend on Saturday, April 13 for the 2013 Roberts Wesleyan Invitational.
