Saints men's track and field team open Outdoor Season at Rochester

Joshua Martell won the javelin, senior Jamal Samaroo returned to track and field competition with two top five finishes and classmate Trevor Bibb was fourth in the 1500 and helped the 4x800 relay to a third place finish as the Saint men's outdoor track and field team opened its outdoor season at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational on Thursday,.

The meet, originally scheduled for Saturday, was moved to Thursday to take advantage of a more favorable weather forecast. The Saint men finished sixth in a 13-team field.

Martel was the lone Saint champion as he won the javelin with a throw of 48.15 meters which came on his last attempt of the competition. He went into the finals in second place by .02 with a 47.93 meter mark before winning on the second to last throw of the event. The Saints picked up 15 points in the event as Shawn Lillie finished fifth at 45.83 meters and Connor Heaney finished eighth.

Samaroo, who did not compete last year, finished second in the triple jump with a 13.83 meter mark and was fifth in the long jump at 6.48 meters. He also finished 11th in the 100 meters. Bibb ran 4:03.99 to finish fourth in the 1500 and joined Scott Smolensky, Dan Viscardi and Dan Driscoll on the 4x800 team which ran 8:17.76. Freshman Jack Martin added a second place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:14.20 with Zane Belden finishing seventh.

Other scoring finishes for the Saints included a seventh by Mark Jannini in the 110 hurdles with Lillie eighth, an eighth by Travis Hamre in the 400 meters, a sixth by Viscardi in the 400 hurdles, eighth by Ellis Toll in the 10000 and an eighth in the 4x400 relay of Harrison Sloan, Heaney, William Johnson and Travis Hamre.

In field events, Al Kabia added a sixth in the triple jump and an eighth in the long jump, Jannini was eighth in the triple junmp and Scott Kasson was sixth in the shot put and seventh in the discus.
