The St. Lawrence University men's tennis team earned a 5-2 victory over regionally-ranked #20 Hobart (5-14) in a quarterfinal match of the 2013 Liberty League Tournament, hosted by Vassar College. The Saints, who improve to 12-6 on the season, will take on Skidmore tomorrow morning at 10:00am for a chance to play in the Championship match on Monday.
St. Lawrence opened up to a 2-1 lead after winning two hard-fought matches at first and third doubles. Rhonny Rosario and Thomas Luchars hung on for the tight 9-8 (9) victory over Nick Schoning and Luke DeLuccia at third doubles. At first doubles, Michael Hayden and Paul Barrett found themselves down 7-5, but battled back to tie the match at 8-8, then rallied back once more to earn the 9-8 (6). Hobart's Mike Fields and Ben Robinson earned a point with a win over John Megas and Rob Schmitz at second doubles by the score of 8-5.
In singles play, Schmitz was the first off court for the Saints, defeating Robinson in the four spot, 6-3, 6-2, to give the Saints a 3-1 lead. Hobart's Sam DeLuccia defeated Hayden at one, 6-3, 6-2, bringing to the score to 3-2. Matt Burke gave St. Lawrence a 4-2 lead with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Schoning at six before Megas clinched the victory for the Saints, defeating Grant in the two spot by the score of 6-4, 6-4.
Barrett led Luke DeLuccia in the five spot when the match ended, while Rosario was down against Fields in the three spot.
