The 2015-16 season came to a close for St. Lawrence men's tennis on Saturday with a 5-0 loss to Rensselaer in the Liberty League semifinal at the Reis Tennis Center on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
RPI swept the Saints in doubles and posted straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles en route to the win. Conference tournament matches are played to decision, so the match was stopped following the fifth win for the Engineers.
In doubles, senior Robert Schmitz and junior Elliot Solandt dropped a hard-fought battle at No. 1, 9-7. Dean Sponholz and Spencer Whitmire fell 8-1 at No. 2 and Paul Barrett and Garrett Sopko lost 8-5 in their match at No. 3.
Sponholz and Schmitz fell at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively in singles to end the match.
At the time of the decision, Barrett was up a set and leading 4-2 in the second at No. 3, as was Whitmire at No. 6. Kevin Frommer was up 1-0 at No. 4, but trailing in the second set, while Marco Amendola had dropped the first but was battling back 5-2 in the second.
The Saints finish the season with a 9-9 record overall and posted a 5-2 mark against conference opponents.
