Saints men's tennis edged by Wheaton in California

The St. Lawrence University Men's Tennis squad dropped a 5-4 decision to Wheaton College Friday afternoon as the Saints posted victories in four of the six singles matches to nearly come back from an early 3-0 deficit in the match played in Fullerton, California.

St. Lawrence (4-3) fell behind early in the match with losses in each of the three doubles matches but rebounded in the singles competition.

Dean Sponholz won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 7-5 and Rhonny Rosario added a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and Marco Amendola won a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles to even the match at 3-3.

Wheaton (3-1) earned a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 to pull the Lyons back in front.

Kevin Frommer won his match at No. 5 winning the first set 6-1 before falling in the second set 4-6 and then capped the win with a 6-2 victory in the third set.

Wheaton sealed the win with a win at No. 3 singles after Robert Schmitz won an opening 6-2 decision in the first set but fell by scores of 6-4 and 7-5 in the final two sets to finish the match.

The Saints return to the courts Saturday with a 10 am match at Whittier College.
