The men's tennis match with Cal Tech on Tuesday came down to No. 6 singles, with Andre Liu battling the Saints' Marco Amendola to a three-set decision (3-6, 6-3, 6-4) to help Cal to a 5-4 team win.
Cal took two of the three doubles matches, winning at No. 1 and No. 3 while Spencer Whitmire and Rhonny Rosario earned a 9-7 win at No. 2 for the Saints first point of the afternoon.
The teams split singles, as St. Lawrence won at No. 1 – No. 3, but Cal took the bottom three spots to prevail. Dean Sponholz earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Alex Henny. Rhonny Rosario rebounded from dropping the first set of his match at No. 2 for a three-set 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.
The final point of the day for the Saints came from senior Robert Schmitz in three sets in the third spot. He won the first 6-1, dropped the second 6-3 and won the final 6-2 for St. Lawrence.
The Saints will conclude their California trip on Thursday, March 24 with a match against Occidental.
