Saints men's squash team go 2-1 at Yale Round Robin

St. Lawrence University's men's squash team came close to a perfect weekend at the Yale Round Robin, but Brown University had two player rally from 2-0 down as the 14th-ranked Bears edged the 16th-ranked Saints 6-3 to hand SLU its only loss of the weekend.

The Saints bounced back from the Brown loss to beat 15th ranked Bowdoin 7-2 and rolled to a 9-0 win over Tufts, ranked 22nd nationally.

Tyler Stout and Thoma Kraft each went 3-0 for the Saints in weekend action and Russell Woeltz was unbeaten in non-counting exhibition matches at 10.

In the Brown match, Alex Dodge and Brown's Brad Thompson traded wins in games one and two with Thompson pulling out a 3-1 win with a 12-10 win in game three and a 11-5 win in game four. Amay Merchant lost in three at two and Brown's Blake Reinson rallied from two down against Vir Seth to win with 11-7, 13-11 and 11-9 scores in the final three games of the match.

Jermaine Xaba lost in three games at four before Will Campo put the Saints on the board with a 3-0 win over Ben Clayman at five. Mike Badali won the first two games 11-9 in his match with Eamon O'Connor, but O'Connor came back to win 3-2 with 11-5, 11-7 and 11-3 wins in games three through five. Tyler stout won in four at seven, Brown's Alex Hsu beat Nate Ticho in four at eight and Kraft won in three at nine with Woeltz also winning three straight games at ten.

The Saints turned back 15th ranked Bowdoin in match two of the Yale tournament, as Merchant and Seth each took key 3-2 win at two and three to help in the victory.

Dodge won 3-0 at one and Merchant prevailed over Stephen Danyluk at two, trading games in matches one through four with Merchant taking the decisive fifth match 11-9. Seth and Andrew Hilboldt also had a marathon match at three as Seth won games one and two by 11-8 scores, Hilbolt won game three 11-6 and game four 12-10 and Seth put it away with a 11-4 win in game five.

Xaba lost 3-1 at four and Campo lost a 3-2 decision to Barrett Takesian as the two swapped wins in the first four matches with Takesian winning game five 11-5. Badali and Stout each won 3-1 at six and seven with Ticho, Kraft and Woeltz all winning three straight at eight through ten.

The Saints completed the weekend and improved to 9-4 on the season with a 9-0 blanking of Tufts.

Dodge won 3-2 at one, coming from 2-1 down to win with 11-7 and 11-9 scores in games four and five. Merchant won 3-1 at two, Seth won in straight games at three and Xaba took a very competitive match from Andrew Kim, winning 14-12, 10-12, 11-7, 11-5 at four. Campo, Badali, Stout, Ticho, Kraft and Woeltz all won in straight games to complete the sweep.

The Saints will host a round robin Friday and Saturday, playing 5th ranked Harvard Friday at 7 pm., 17th ranked Middlebury Saturday at 10 a.m. and 8th ranked Western Ontario Saturday at 1 pm at the Robie Squash Center.
