Saints men's squash team drop tight 5-4 decision to Penn at Nationals

St. Lawrence University's men's squash team lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to ninth-ranked Penn in the semifinals of the Hoehn Cup competition at the College Squash Association team nationals at Princeton on Saturday.

The Saints, now 11-7 on the season, will play Williams for third position in the Hoehn division and are guaranteed their best finish ever in nationals as they can finish no lower than 12th. Penn advances to meet Columbia for the Hoehn Cup on Sunday.

The Quakers won four of five matches at the top of the lineup to set the stage for their narrow victory over the Saints. Thomas Mattsson beat Vir Seth 3-0 at one, Danny Greenberg edged past Kyle Ogilvy 13-11, 12-10, 11-2 at two, Trevor McGuinness edged Chris Fernandez 3-2 at four, coming from 2-1 down to win 11-7 and 11-9 in games four and five and John Dudzik also came from 2-1 down to edge Amay Merchant 3-2 at five with Merchant winning games one and three by 11-9 scoes, Dudzik taking games two and four 12-10 and the deciding fifth match 11-8. Jack Maine earned the other Penn win with a 3-0 decision over Michael Badali at nine.

Ibrahim Khan was a 3-1 winner over Daniel Judd at three, dropping game one 11-7, but coming back with 11-9, 11-7 and 11-9 wins, while Will Campo also lost his first game against Derek Chilvers 11-2, but rallied to win 3-1 with 11-2, 11-8 and 11-5 games at six. Sebastian Riedelsheimer traded wins with Justin Ang, winning 11-9 and losing 11-8 before Riedelsheimer put it away with 12-10 and 18-16 games for a 3-1 win at seven and Duncan Maxwell beat Michael Mutscheller 3-0 at eight, 13-11, 11-9, 11-5.
