St. Lawrence University's nationally second-ranked men's squash team made a bold statement and underscored its depth in defending its Liberty League squash championship at Vassar College.
A total of 20 different players were in the lineup in at least one of the four matches in the tournament and the Saints did not lose a game or a match until their final match of the tournament, a showdown with fifth-ranked Rochester. The Saints won that one 6-3, winning four of the first five completed matches to set the table for the win.
The Saints beat Bard and Hobart by 9-0 scores on Saturday to start tournament play.
The Saints clinched the title against Rochester when Sebastian Riedelsheimer beat Aria Fazelimanesh 11-5, 14-12, 8-11, 11-6 at seven. Hussein Elrayes was a 11-9, 11-9, 15-13 winner over Michelangelo Bertocchi at five, Anderson Good beat Will Mohr 11-8, 11-4, 11-5 at six, Kyle Ogilvy beat Ben Pitfield 11-6, 11-6, 12-10 at eight and Duncan Maxwell beat Meng Xiaomen 22-8, 11-3, 11-7 at nine to give the Saints their good start against the Yellowjackets.
Amr Khalifa gave the Saints their lone win in the top four with a 11-6, 11-4, 9-11, 11-5 win over Neil Cordell at one. Rochester's Ryosei Kobayashi beat Edgar Zayas in five at three, winning game one 11-8 before Zayas responded with 11-9 and 11-5 wins. Kobayashi then won the match with 11-8 and 11-3 wins in games four and five. Mario Yanex beat Ahmed Bayoumy 11-7, 11-8, 11-6 at two and Tomotaka Endo beat Ibriham Khan 7-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-8 at four.
Chris Fernandez won the exhibition match at ten against Rochester, beating Christian Riedelsheimer 11-4, 11-3, 10-12, 11-5.
In the opening match of the day on Sunday, the Saints brought out their "A" lineup for the first time and rolled to a 9-0 win over Vassar, winning all matches by 3-0 scores with no Brewer players reaching double digits in points in any of the games.
Khalifa was a 11-3, 11-5, 11-7 winner over Vincent Mencotti at one, Bayoumy made his collegiate debut with a 11-3, 11-1, 11-2 win over Timothy Viet at two, Zayas beat David Garfinkle 11-2, 11-2, 11-5 at three and Khan was a 11-3, 11-4, 11-2 winner over Noah Kulick at four.Elrayes beatTim Boycott at six 11-1, 11-4 11-3, Riedelsheimer beat Lucas Fifer 11-2, 11-4, 11-7 at seven, Ogilvy was a 11-2, 11-4, 11-3 winner over Richard Bryenton at eight and Maxwell beat Manav Dalmiya 11-1, 11-2, 11-2 at nine. Munro won the exhibition at ten with a 11-1, 11-0, 11-8 decision over Matthew Fastman.
SLU will host top-ranked Harvard and 10th ranked Princeton in matches at the Robie Squash Center Dec. 6-7 before a break for the holidays.
