No. 2 Vassar struck once to defeat the No. 3 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team 1-0 in a Liberty League semifinal game, Saturday afternoon in Geneva, New York.

Reid Smith tallied his first goal of the season with a shot from 20 yards out, through traffic, to the lower left corner of the net to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.

The Saints edged Vassar in shots in the first half (7-5), but the Brewers held a 3-2 shots on goal advantage.

Ryan Crouse created St. Lawrence's first offensive chance of the second half sending a shot just right of the net. Tapshak Augustine and Jethro Dede opened up another opportunity for the Scarlet and Brown just a few minutes later, but the shot went wide.

"The team played well today by creating chances to score," said head coach Mike Toshack. ""However, we didn't finish the chances we created and that was the difference. It was a well played game by both teams and a good illustration of the quality soccer being played in the Liberty League."

Smith's goal served as the game winner after a scoreless second half, despite multiple opportunities from the Saints, including three corner kicks from Aidan Callahan in the final ten minutes of play.

St. Lawrence finished with an 11-7 shots on goal advantage and the Brewers held a 5-2 shots on goal advantage. Mike Smith made four saves between the pipes for the Saints.

The Saints ended the season with an 8-7-3 record, while Vassar improved to 10-4-3 and will advance to play Hobart for the Liberty League Championship on Sunday, November 5th.

"Our seniors Ryan Roche, Rob Brandell and Luis Jimenez were outstanding today and left everything on the field," Toshack continued. "Now we turn our sights to 2018 and begin building for next season."
